What Happens If Ptosis of the Eyelid is Left Untreated?

If eyelid ptosis is left untreated, the drooping could continue to get worse until the condition obstructs your vision. This does happen in some cases. In rare instances, ptosis can cause astigmatism. This occurs when the pressure of the drooping eyelid alters the shape of the eye.

In many cases, however, ptosis never progresses to the point of causing vision problems. It remains merely a cosmetic issue that may or may not bother you depending on its severity and how noticeable you perceive it to be.

Some bruising and swelling are normal during the first 48 hours after surgery and can be controlled with ice packs. You will need to keep your head elevated, which may mean sleeping in an upright position for a few days.

How Long Does Ptosis Surgery Recovery Take?

Full recovery from ptosis surgery can take up to six months. At this time all of the swelling will be gone and your eyelids will have settled into their new positions. You will start to see results in about six to eight weeks, however. Most people can return to work in about a week. More strenuous activities will have to wait for four to six weeks.
