Why Do Men Choose Monsplasty?
Whether due to weight gain, aging, or major weight loss, the male mons pubis can become enlarged or droopy. This state of affairs is often referred to as a FUPA (full upper pubic area) and occurs between the genitals and the lower abdomen. For men, excess fullness in the mons pubis often leads to frustration with appearance, discomfort in certain clothing, and decreased confidence in intimate settings.
Monsplasty offers a surgical solution to the problem, removing excess fat and skin in the area to create a more athletic and masculine appearance. More importantly, it can provide a real self-confidence boost and make clothing fit more comfortably.
What Causes a Prominent Mons Pubis in Men?
There are several different reasons why men may experience excessive fullness in the mons pubis region. The common thread tying them all together is the fact that excess fat in this area can prove extremely difficult to lose on your own. Even men with toned upper bodies may carry disproportionate fat in the mons pubis, creating a bulge that’s uncomfortable and embarrassing at times. Reasons for an enlarged male mons pubis include:
- Weight gain
- A propensity for storing fat in the area
- Aging, which leads to skin laxity and fat accumulation
- Massive weight loss, where the pubic skin doesn’t retract
- Previous surgeries or trauma (e.g., hernia repairs or other abdominal incisions)
What Monsplasty Can Do for Male Patients
There are many compelling reasons to consider monsplasty. The procedure is highly focused but offers many benefits to the right candidates. In men, a monsplasty procedure can do the following:
- Surgically reduce excess fat and loose skin above the penis
- Improve your comfort in pants, underwear, and during workouts
- Enhance definition between the lower abdomen and pubic region
- Visually lengthen the penis by reducing overhanging tissue
- Improve your confidence in clothing, swimwear, and intimate settings
How Monsplasty Is Performed in Men
Monsplasty surgeries take about one to two hours to complete and are performed the same way in men as they are in women. The procedure is generally performed under general anesthesia and done on an outpatient basis, so you can go home the day of your surgery. The procedure involves the following steps:
- A small horizontal incision is made just above the base of the penis
- Fat is removed via direct excision and/or liposuction, and loose skin is trimmed and lifted
- The skin is then re-draped and smoothed for a flatter, firmer appearance
Considerations Unique to Male Patients
While the monsplasty surgery itself is done the same way as it is in women, men often express unique concerns about the procedure. We would like to discuss some of them here in the hopes of addressing at least a few of your concerns.
Scar Concealment
Men are often concerned about where their monsplasty scar will be. The incision is made just above the base of the penis in a natural skin fold. It is also well within the pubic hair zone, allowing it to be covered easily. You will have no trouble hiding your scar if you wish.
Penis Visibility and Aesthetic Proportion
For men with significant mons pubis fullness, the overhang can cause the penis to appear shorter than it truly is. Monsplasty can expose more of the penile shaft and make it easier to see. This can make the penis appear larger, but it won’t actually be any larger. This is not a penile enlargement procedure.
Athletic and Clothing Fit
An enlarged mons pubis may be visible in certain clothing but can also be uncomfortable. Many men choose monsplasty for improved clothing fit and comfort during workouts, especially if they experience tightness, sweating, or chafing in athletic wear. Monsplasty can greatly improve your comfort during times of physical activity.
Is Liposuction Alone Enough?
Liposuction alone is sometimes enough to address a bulging pubic area. In order for this to work, the patient must have a fat-only FUPA. Lipo alone is also generally best for younger men with good skin elasticity. Lipo by itself is sometimes inadequate, however, in which case monsplasty is necessary. This is true when:
- There’s loose or hanging skin
- The fat is dense, fibrous, and not easily suctioned
- A previous surgery left behind skin redundancy
You may already have a good idea of what you need, but your surgeon will assess your skin tone, fat density, and anatomy to determine if liposuction alone, monsplasty, or both are necessary for you.
Recovery Timeline for Male Monsplasty
Most men report a noticeable improvement in comfort, self-image, and silhouette within six to eight weeks of their surgery. There are a few healing milestones you will need to reach along the way before you get there, though.
- Day 1–3
- Mild swelling, tightness, and bruising in the pubic area
- You may feel pressure when sitting or standing
- Week 1
- Light walking and daily activities resume
- Most men return to desk jobs in five to seven days
- Weeks 2–4
- Swelling improves significantly
- Return to light workouts and most activities
- Week 6 and Beyond
- Scar flattens
- Final results become visible as tissue settles
Can Monsplasty Be Combined With Other Male Procedures?
Monsplasty can absolutely be combined with other procedures, and having multiple procedures together can save you money in the long run. It is often a part of post-weight loss male body contouring packages and is frequently combined with:
- Abdominal or flank liposuction
- Male tummy tuck
- Gynecomastia surgery
- Lower body lift (for massive weight loss patients)
