What is RF Skin Tightening and How Does It Work?

RF skin tightening is a nonsurgical treatment that uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to heat deep skin layers without any needles or incisions. Think of it kind of like a clothes dryer for your face. The heat of the RF energy shrinks existing collagen fibers in your skin just like the dryer shrank your favorite jeans, causing a bit of an immediate tightening in your skin. The real benefits occur over the next few weeks to months, however, as your skin ramps up collagen production.

What RF Skin Tightening Is Not

RF skin tightening is not the same as RF microneedling because it doesn’t involve any needles or skin punctures. It’s also not the same as J-plasma treatments, which combine RF energy with helium plasma and require placing a small device beneath the skin. Please understand that RF skin tightening is also not a substitute for a facelift or liposuction. It tightens the skin, but it won’t remove excess skin or fat.

What Does RF Skin Tightening Treat?

RF skin tightening is an effective treatment for early signs of aging, but it’s not universally applied. Your results will depend on treatment intensity, the area being treated, your skin quality, and how much skin laxity you have. It’s best suited for treating mild to moderate:

  • Skin laxity
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Crepey skin
  • Reduced firmness
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Early signs of aging

What Areas Can RF Skin Tightening Treat?

RF skin tightening is primarily used to treat facial areas, but it can benefit other parts of the body when appropriate. If you wish, Dr. Bennett can evaluate areas such as your abdomen, arms, or thighs to see if this treatment would benefit you there. RF skin tightening is, however, primarily used on the:

  • Lower face
  • Jawline
  • Jowls
  • Neck
  • Cheeks

What to Expect During Treatment

It varies, of course, but most patients can expect an RF skin tightening treatment to take about an hour. Your appointment begins with a thorough evaluation of your skin and a discussion about your treatment goals. If this treatment is appropriate for you, Dr. Bennett will move a handheld RF device across your skin to deliver a controlled amount of heat. You will feel the RF handpiece moving over your skin and may experience a warm sensation. You should not feel a hot or burning sensation and should tell Dr. Bennett right away if you do.

RF Skin Tightening Results

You can expect RF skin tightening treatment to result in visibly firmer, tighter skin with an improved texture. But don't expect RF skin tightening to produce the same results as a facelift, surgical skin excision, or liposuction procedure. Patients who are unhappy with their results after RF skin tightening treatment often had unrealistic expectations about fixing deep wrinkles, sagging skin, or advanced signs of aging. It simply cannot produce the degree of lifting achieved with a facelift, neck lift, tummy tuck, arm lift, or another surgical skin-removal procedure.

Although you might notice a mild skin improvement in the days following your treatment, the real work happens over the next few weeks and months as your skin produces more collagen. This process means that you’ll see gradual improvements in skin firmness and texture over two to six months rather than getting an immediate glow-up. Many patients prefer this slow, progressive improvement as it makes changes much more subtle — people you see often won’t necessarily know you had some kind of treatment.

How Many Treatment Sessions Will I Need?

Some patients need only one session while others benefit from a series of treatments. Dr. Bennett will evaluate your skin to determine the best approach for you based on your current skin conditions, treatment goals, medical history, healing rate, and other factors. She can determine the correct number of treatments and how far apart to space them. We offer both single sessions and a 3-session package.

RF Skin Tightening Treatment Longevity

RF skin tightening is not a permanent procedure because your skin will continue to age. Results last approximately one to three years, however, making treatment a worthwhile investment. You won’t necessarily need to start over with a new treatment schedule as you age, though. Sometimes periodic maintenance treatments are appropriate.

The exact price of RF skin tightening varies from one patient to the next based on individual needs and case complexity. Making our services available and affordable for everyone who wants them is important to us. As such, RF skin tightening treatments at the Mia Aesthetics Atlanta clinic are as follows:

  • Single RF Skin Tightening Session: Starting at $200

Side Effects and Complications

Many patients experience mild redness, swelling, sensitivity, and tenderness in the treatment area for about 24 hours after RF skin tightening. This is perfectly normal and not cause for alarm. Like all medical procedures, however, sometimes RF skin tightening can create complications in some patients. Complications are rare, and Dr. Bennett takes every precaution to minimize any risk. We want you to understand, however, that every medical procedure has inherent risks, and those of RF skin tightening include:

  • Burns from excessive heat
  • Temporary skin irritation
  • Prolonged redness or swelling
  • Changes in skin color
  • Loss of facial fat

How We Minimize Complication Risk

At Mia Aesthetics, your safety is always our top priority. One way we reduce the risk of RF skin tightening complications is careful patient evaluation. We won’t give you the treatment if we believe you’re likely to experience a problem. Dr. Bennett also adjusts treatment intensity and timelines based on your skin’s unique needs and tolerances.
