Why More Men Are Considering Brow Lifts
The desire to look good, feel confident, and fight the signs of aging isn’t exclusive to women. An increasing number of men are seeking brow lifts to correct heavy, drooping brows and forehead wrinkles. A drooping brow tends to make men look angry and tired, as well, and an angry look can be problematic in business and social situations. The male brow does have a different anatomy than the female brow, making it important to choose a plastic surgeon with experience tailoring brow lifts for male features. Here you’ll find everything you need to know about men’s brow lift surgery.
Key Differences Between Common Male and Female Brow Lift Goals
Subtlety is critical to a successful male brow lift. Excess elevation looks unnatural on a man’s brow because males tend to have lower, flatter brows than women. While women want an arched brow, men will look feminized with this result. Instead, male brow lifts prioritize:
- Restoring a neutral, non-angry expression
- Avoiding feminization of the eyes
- Preserving a strong, horizontal brow line
Signs You May Be a Good Candidate for a Male Brow Lift
A brow lift can be a great option for some men, but it corrects very specific problems. To be a good candidate, you should be in generally good health overall, a nonsmoker or willing to quit for surgery, and experience some or all of the following:
- Heaviness or sagging in the outer brow that gives a tired or stern look
- Deep horizontal forehead creases that don’t respond to Botox
- Eyebrows sitting below the bony ridge or hooding the upper eyelid
- People frequently ask if you’re angry, tired, or stressed
- A preference for a surgical correction over temporary injectable solutions
Surgical Techniques for Male Brow Lifts
There are several different surgical techniques used to complete male brow lifts. The coronal brow lift, however, is rarely used due to scar visibility and the risk of creating overly elevated eyebrows. This particular lift creates a scar across the top of the scalp from one ear to the other that is very difficult to hide if you ultimately lose your hair. You do have several other brow lift options to choose from.
Temporal (Lateral) Brow Lift for Men
This is the most popular brow lift for men. It elevates the outer thirds of the brow without disturbing its natural horizontal position. The incisions and subsequent scars are located just behind the hairline at the temples and are quite short.
Endoscopic Brow Lift for Men
An endoscopic brow lift requires several incisions along the scalp, but they are very small at 1 to 2 cm long. A small camera and surgical instruments are inserted through these incisions to allow the surgeon to do their work. An endoscopic procedure is less invasive than other techniques and results in minimal scarring. It also allows for precise control of brow elevation and symmetry.
Direct Brow Lift for Men (Less Common)
In a direct brow lift, incisions are placed just above the eyebrow. This procedure is usually reserved for men who have very significant brow drooping (ptosis) along with thick brow hair to cover the scars. This technique has the most visible scar potential but can work for older men with thick hair or deep wrinkles.
What Results Can Men Expect from a Brow Lift?
The goal of a male brow lift is to restore a youthful aesthetic that in no way mimics a female brow contour. You should look refreshed but not “done,” opting for a subtle improvement rather than a dramatic change. After surgery, men often look less angry or stern, with a more relaxed and approachable expression.
You should expect a slight elevation of the sides of your brow as well as an improvement in forehead wrinkles. This is especially true if you pair your brow lift with Botox. Your brow should maintain a horizontal position or even a slight downward slope. There should not be any unnatural arching or elevation.
Recovery Timeline for Male Patients
Men and women heal somewhat differently after a brow lift. Men tend to have thicker facial skin, more blood flow, and more active sebaceous glands. As a result, they may experience more bruising and swelling than women. Here is a general timeline of what you can expect as you heal from your brow lift.
- Days 1–7
- Swelling and bruising peak around the temples or eyelids
- You’ll wear a head wrap or compression bandage for a few days
- Day 7–10
- Sutures or staples (if used) are typically removed
- Most men can return to desk jobs and light activities
- Weeks 2–4:
- Bruising resolves, but mild swelling or forehead tightness may persist
- Week 6 and Beyond
- Final brow positioning becomes more apparent
- Most male patients are back to full grooming routines (shaving forehead/temples, haircuts, workouts)
- Men with short hair or receding hairlines may notice scars longer; scar management strategies should begin early
Can a Male Brow Lift Be Combined with Other Procedures?
Male brow lifts can absolutely be combined with other procedures and often are. An experienced plastic surgeon can create a personalized surgery plan for you that addresses all of your concerns while taking into account your facial structure, hairline, and aging pattern. They will carefully plan your combination surgery to get the desired result and not one that makes you look pulled tight or overdone. Of course, preserving masculine facial angles is always a priority.
Procedures commonly paired with a man’s brow lift include:
- Upper blepharoplasty (eyelid repair) to reduce upper eyelid hooding and enhance eye openness
- Botox to address dynamic lines, but in a natural-looking dose
- Neck lift or chin lipo for men looking for stronger jawline definition as part of a larger facial rejuvenation
These are some of the procedures most often combined with a brow lift for men, but your surgeon can put together any surgeries you wish as long as it is safe to do so.
Recap: A Natural Result is Key
Brow lifts for men are most successful when they preserve or restore a strong, masculine look rather than creating an arched or overly lifted brow. With the right surgical technique and an experienced plastic surgeon, men can achieve subtle, refreshed results without looking as though they’ve gone under the knife. Always choose a highly skilled, experienced surgeon familiar with male facial aesthetics and brow lift techniques tailored for men, such as those here at Mia Aesthetics. You don’t want a plastic surgeon’s inexperience with men to be literally written all over your face, so choose wisely.
