Jawline Slimming vs. Jawline Enhancement – Why Understanding the Difference Matters
Jawline contouring is a general term that encompasses many different procedures, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Some patients need jawline slimming to achieve better jawline definition while others need jawline enhancement. When multiple issues contribute to poor jawline contour, both slimming and enhancing procedures may be combined to produce the desired result. Unfortunately, choosing the wrong approach can lead to unnatural results and disappointment. Your plastic surgeon is the best source of advice about your personal needs, but this guide will cover the basics and help you get an idea of what might be best for you.
What Is Jawline Slimming?
Jawline slimming procedures focus on removing excess bulk and fat along the jawline to create a sharper, more defined jawline. Candidates for these procedures include people:
- With a wide or square lower face caused by muscle or fat
- Who feel their jawline looks too heavy or undefined due to soft tissue
- Wishing to accentuate their jawline without adding structure or bulk
Jawline Slimming Options
If jawline slimming sounds like a good fit for you, there are both non-surgical and surgical options you can discuss with your plastic surgeon. All have their own pros and cons for you to consider, of course, based on your personal desires and aesthetic goals.
Botox® Masseter Reduction
A non-surgical approach to jawline slimming, Botox is often used to relax the masseter muscle that controls the lower jaw. Some people have an enlarged muscle that can distort the jawline contour, often due to genetics or as a result of grinding their teeth (bruxism). Botox relaxes this muscle, leading to a slimmer and more contoured lower face and jaw. The results of Botox are temporary, but repeated treatments will maintain your new jaw contour and will continue to weaken the muscle over time.
Buccal Fat Removal
Chubby cheeks are cute on babies, but they can be embarrassing in adulthood. They can also add enough mass to your face to cause a lack of definition in your jaw. A plastic surgeon can correct both issues for you with a buccal fat removal surgery. During this procedure, an incision is made inside your cheek and your buccal fat pad is removed through it. The result is slimmer cheeks and better distinction between your cheeks and jawline.
Neck and Chin Lipo
Sometimes the jawline lacks definition because of excess neck or chin fat. In that case, removing that excess fat via liposuction can result in a smoother, cleaner, and more defined jawline contour. Chin lipo can also eliminate a double chin, and who doesn’t want to get rid of that? You can get neck or chin lipo separately or in combination with each other depending on your aesthetic goals.
What Is Jawline Enhancement?
Jawline enhancement is literally the opposite of jawline slimming. Enhancing the jawline focuses on building structure and definition where there isn’t any due to a lack of fat or muscle definition. Common candidates for jawline enhancement are:
- Patients with weak chin or jaw definition
- Individuals who feel their jawline blends into their neck
- Those who wish to add volume and sharpen contours for improved definition and facial balance
Jawline Enhancement Options
As is true for jawline slimming, jawline enhancement is achieved through both non-surgical and surgical means. Finding the right fit for you will ultimately require a chat with a plastic surgeon, but it’s good to know what options you may have to choose from.
Juvéderm® Fillers for Jawline Definition
Dermal fillers provide a non-surgical option for those who need some help building up a jawline that lacks definition. Juvéderm hyaluronic acid (HA) filler is the only brand we use at Mia Aesthetics, and we use it to add volume and support to the angles around your jawline and chin. If you have a very narrow or recessed lower face, dermal fillers can temporarily fill in the gaps for you. As with Botox, however, you will need ongoing maintenance treatments if you want to keep your new look.
Chin Augmentation (Fat Transfer or Implants)
If you need a more dramatic enhancement or want a more permanent solution, chin augmentation surgery could be right for you. Chin augmentation adds projection and strength to the chin, resulting in a more defined jaw and lower face. You can opt for a chin implant or a fat transfer augmentation. During the latter, your plastic surgeon uses liposuction to harvest unwanted fat from your body and then injects it into your chin, creating an all-natural amplification.
How to Tell if You Need Slimming, Enhancement, or Both
Although they are opposites, sometimes patients need both jawline slimming and jawline enhancement. This may seem counterintuitive, but the concept comes into better focus when you consider that a single patient may have multiple issues. Someone may, for example, have oversized masseter muscles that require slimming and a weak chin that requires enhancement. This table can help you determine if you need jawline slimming, jawline enhancement, or perhaps both.
| Feature | Slimming Procedure | Enhancement Procedure |
|---|---|---|
| Jawline fullness due to muscle or fat | Botox, buccal fat removal, or chin/neck lipo | N/A |
| Weak or recessed chin | N/A | Fillers or augmentation |
| Blended jaw-to-neck transition | Treatment based on whether the excess tissue is fat or muscle | N/A |
| Square or heavy lower face | Botox masseter slimming | N/A |
